Lecture 1 "New Challenges for Deep Space Exploration with Micro/Nano Satellites"

(February 15th 2021)

Professor Ryu Funase, ISAS/JAXA and the University of Tokyo

Dr. Funase obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, The University of Tokyo in 2007. After 5 years of research and development for deep space exploration spacecraft in JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), he has been an associate professor at the University of Tokyo since 2012. Since 2019, he also works as a professor for JAXA/ISAS (Institute for Space and Astronautical Science).

As a project manager, he successfully launched PROCYON, the world's smallest deep space probe weighing 65 kg in 2014, and is currently leading the development of EQUULEUS, a much smaller 10 kg CubeSat that will be launched this year to explore the lunar Lagrange point.

Today's his lecture is based on his experience in the research and development of such deep space micro/nano spacecraft.
